Insured persons

Liechtenstein employers are obliged to insure their employees against accidents and occupational illnesses. Accident insurance distinguishes between occupational accidents, non-occupational accidents and occupational illnesses.

Employees working in Liechtenstein, including homeworkers, apprentices, trainees, volunteers and persons working in sheltered employment or disability facilities, are compulsorily insured. Persons who are working for an employer to clarify their career choice are also compulsorily insured for the duration of this activity.

The following are not compulsorily insured

  • Persons who have a secondary occupation or a secondary office and on whose remuneration no AHV contributions are levied, for this activity;
  • family members working for the company who do not receive a cash salary and do not pay AHV contributions;
  • Employees of legal entities and partnerships who are considered self-employed within the meaning of the AHVG.

Part-time employees whose weekly working hours with an employer are less than 8 hours are only insured against occupational accidents. For these persons, accidents on the way to work are considered occupational accidents.

Self-employed persons resident in Liechtenstein and their family members who are not compulsorily insured may take out voluntary insurance. The provisions on compulsory insurance apply by analogy to voluntary insurance.

Insurance benefits are generally granted in the event of occupational accidents, non-occupational accidents, occupational illnesses and physical injuries similar to the consequences of an accident.

Start and end of compulsory insurance

The insurance begins on the day on which the employee starts work or should have started work on the basis of the employment, but in any case on the date on which the employee goes to work.

The insurance ends on the 31st day after the day on which the entitlement to at least half the salary ceases. Daily allowances from compulsory accident insurance, health insurance, unemployment insurance and disability insurance (IV) are also deemed to be salary insofar as they replace the continued payment of salary.

Insurance by agreement

Insurance cover for non-occupational accidents can be extended by a further 6 months by means of so-called interim insurance if this is agreed within the 31-day extension period.
